Rebecca Morgan seeks out challenges. She has climbed two of the world’s even summits, Mount Kilimanjaro in
Africa and Mount Kosciuszko in Australia. And
she made it to the Australian peak in a freak
blizzard with gale-force winds.
She has also hiked the Andes Mountains
in Peru, following the ancient Incan trail to
Machu Picchu, and paddled through the jungle
tributaries of the Amazon River, terrified as a
9-foot anaconda slithered into the water beside
Working in HR—a field in which new
problems arise daily, from angry employees to
unexpected regulations—can sometimes feel a
bit like navigating the uncharted waters of the
Amazon, says Morgan, who is director of the
Society for Human Resource Management’s
(SHRM’s) Montana State Council and a past
president of SHRM’s Big Sky Chapter. But she
is determined never to let fear hold her back.

My parents taught me to “live and let live” and
“don’t judge others until you’ve walked a mile
in their shoes.” They modeled compassion
and helped me understand that everyone is
fighting a battle that I know nothing about.
