SHRM’s Puerto Rico Members
Help Hurricane Victims
About 450 members of SHRM’s
Puerto Rico chapter were trained in
October to help workers and businesses fill out applications for federal aid following Hurricane Maria.
The hurricane caused more than 30
deaths and an estimated $90 billion
in damage when it struck the Caribbean island on Sept. 20.
When the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) asked if SHRM members would volunteer to be
trained to assist people with their federal paperwork, the chapter staff didn’t
“Of course we want to help,” said Aixa Garcia, member services coordinator.
“We are human resources. We are proud that they called us.”
Homeowners and business owners in regions that are declared disaster areas
may apply for federal assistance for uninsured and underinsured damages and
losses resulting from Hurricane Maria. But the process can be complicated and
frustrating, said Michelle Benitez, SHRM-SCP, managing director, human
resources consulting, with HUB International Ltd., an insurance brokerage firm
in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.
People seeking aid are often directed to apply online, she said. But almost
two weeks after the storm, 95 percent of electricity customers remained without
power. Phone service was also spotty.
SHRM provides numerous resources for those preparing for or recovering
from natural and man-made disasters. For news articles on disaster recovery, visit
www.shrm.org/disaster-resources. Or search shrm.org for the SHRM members-only toolkit, Managing Through Emergency and Disaster.
SHRM members also can exchange ideas and questions on SHRM Connect,
a members-only online discussion platform, via the Disaster Prep & Recovery
